You may be wondering how to get started doing astronomy. It’s easier than you might think!

For starters, you don’t even need a telescope. On the next clear night, go outside in your backyard or at a park and just look up! You can lie down on the ground on a comfy blanket or on the hood of a car to get a wide view of the sky. Look up at the stars. Take some time to look at the arrangement and colors of the stars. Pick out the shapes of familiar constellations. Try to find the Big Dipper. You can use an app or a planisphere, or star chart, to help you locate objects like planets in the sky.

You can also check out a local astronomy club in your area. Members will usually be very happy to let you take a look through their telescopes. In addition, local astronomy clubs will often hold beginner nights for the public to come view.

If you want to, you can get a pair of binoculars or a telescope for yourself. A great object to start off with is the Moon. It’s relatively easy to find in the sky and you can enjoy looking at its detail.

It’s a good idea to pack a few essentials if you plan to spend some time outdoors. Fill a tote bag with essentials like bug spray, a blanket to lie on, a jacket or sweater for when it cools off, and some tasty snacks. Remember to wear comfortable clothing and shoes so you’ll enjoy your stargazing evening.

When was the last time you looked up at the stars? Don't let another night pass you by without checking out the stars. With these tips, you’ll be a stargazer before you know it.

Time to go stargazing! It's fun and easy!
