How To Find Planets in the Night Sky

You might be wondering, “How do I find planets in the night sky without a telescope?” For starters, planets are found along the zodiac, an area of the sky centered on the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun through the sky.

An easy planet to start with is Venus. It’s never very far from the Sun. Right before sunrise or right after sunset, look toward the area of the sky where the Sun is going to rise or just set. If you see a bright object, it very likely is Venus. Venus looks like a bright white star in the sky not far from the horizon.

As you look at an object, remember this: Stars twinkle. Planets don’t twinkle.

Sometimes, two or more planets are visible at one time. Happy planet hunting!
