Lexi's Tips
Hi, I’m Lexi and welcome to my garage. Today, I'm going to show you how to sew on a button. So many buttons! They're everywhere and even at the bottom of your washing machine. Don't you hate it when you find one of these and now you've got to sew it back on but you're not quite sure how? I'm going to show you how. Do you have a loose button that's getting ready to fall off your pants, shirt, skirt, or shorts? Or do you just have missing buttons that have fallen off completely? You know, maybe after a great big Thanksgiving Day meal, they popped off? No matter your situation, I'll show you how to sew on a button by hand with no sewing machine required.

To sew on a button, all you need is a pair of scissors, matching colored thread and some sewing needles which you can find little packs at your local sewing shop or at your local big-box retailer's sewing or craft department.

You'll notice that some buttons have four holes or they have two holes. These instructions can be applied to both types of buttons. On 4-hole buttons, just repeat the instructions again on the second set of holes.

Instructions:

  1. Oftentimes, if a button has fallen off, you'll still find the thread attached to the button. Cut this thread off because you're going to start with some new thread.
  2. Get your new thread and pull a long piece thread.
  3. Thread your needle. Now match the ends of the thread together and make a little knot at the end. Make another knot right on top of the original knot to help prevent the knot from slipping through the fabric.
  4. Take your button and position it where you want it attached or where it was originally attached on your garment.
  5. Push your needle from below through one of the holes of your button, holding your button in place so it doesn't shift. Your needle should now be on the top side of the button.
  6. Now push the needle back down through the hole next to the one you came up through. Pull it through until the thread gets taut. Repeat this step about 4 times looping through the same two holes to make sure button is secure. End with the needle on the back side of garment.
  7. On the back side, take your needle and poke it slightly back into the fabric sideways but not all the way through, picking up a little thread from under the button. Push the needle through while staying on the back side. Pull the thread almost taut but leave a little loop of thread.
  8. Now take your needle and poke it through the loop of thread and then pull the thread taught. This will create a knot. Repeat this step about 4 times, securing the button.
  9. Take your scissors and carefully cut close to the base of the where the thread is.

Your button is now secured! I’m so glad you stopped by today. You can contact me on my social media anytime. I love hearing about your latest DIY projects and always welcome your questions and comments. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Until next time! Happy sewing!
